where is Atlantis

Top 3 Locations For Atlantis

Where or what could Atlantis be? Is it spoken of by the Egyptians in the Duat; islands of advanced irrigation systems that allowed them to grow bountiful crops.

Could it be just as Plato said? Near where the Mediterranean opens up at the pillars of Hercules, having sunk to the ocean depths after great catastrophe. Leaving behind just the remnants of the peaks of its mountains, now the Azore islands as congressman Ignatius Donnelly believed in the late 19th century?

Maybe not, thanks to the discovery of plate tectonics.

But, there are many more theories (and counting) on the subject of Atlantis. It’s lure has lasted after all these years. With not much more to solidify it in history than Plato’s brief writings and yet we have remained captivated. The ocean depths spark our imagination and remain a place of mystery and potential discovery.

Donana National Park, Spain

In southern Spain, researchers uncovered a site pertaining to many of the items on the checklist of Atlantis. It was discovered by a treasure hunting satellite that lead to further investigation and further discovery.

The site showed a similar structure to the one described by Plato. Even showing evidence of a harbor wall estimated to be 5 1/2 miles long! The state of Atlantis had been described as a naval superpower and this would be fitting of the description.

The idea of a mixture of man-made and natural structures making up this circular shaped city, was also matching the description of what was being found here. Along with a huge methane layer deposit of animal and plant life that could be the remains of a post-cataclysm mass grave.

The Temple at Cancho Roano

Another piece of evidence that developed and solidified the potential of this site was found not much more than 100 miles away. In a place called Cancho Roano. It was here that a monument was found; a memorial, that seemed to commemorate the local people’s cultural heritage. At its centre is a temple, and within this temple, there is a symbol carved into the ground; a symbol of possibly ancient Egyptian origin know as a Shen ring; it represents eternal protection.

It is interesting that they should find a supposedly ancient Egyptian symbol. Considering that the people of Atlantis were most likely a seafaring civilization that offered trade to other regions. The Egyptian proficiency in many areas such as building seemed to have developed almost instantaneously. It could be that their advancements were made through knowledge of an advanced group or even may have been the remnants of this ancient culture.

The evidence continues to mount in favor of this one.

A Symbolic Find

A final and what is perhaps the most cited piece of evidence in the case of the location in Spain was also found in this temple. At its entrance there is a large stone stele or column that had a symbol carved into it. On it, stands a man with what appears to be a large sword, perhaps representing a warrior, and next to him is a circular symbol made up of inner circles that look incredibly similar to a crude representation of Atlantis.

Considering the unique design of the city of Atlantis, it would not be surprising to find that it had come to known and recognized in ancient culture if it had existed, by a symbol such as the one found here. Even Plato takes the time to describe the nature of its layout in detail, which is perhaps not incredibly common when describing a city unless it had been rather unique.

But the location? It is somewhat adjacent to the famed pillars of Heracles that opened into the Atlantic. Plato described it as opposite these pillars and so here the geography is not quite matching. Also, considering its size; would Atlantis being placed at this location match the size of modern day Libya to which Plato compared it?

Richat Structure, Eye of the Sahara, Africa

Okay, so this one is interesting. At first glance it appears to be a perfect match visually to a potential location for Atlantis. I mean look at it.

Further fascinating evidence arises when looking at the area around the period of the time of Atlantis; A study that shows the Richat structure falling directly into a location within the continent of Africa that, 9000 years pre present shows evidence of much higher lake levels.

To top this off, a further study shows a large ancient river system that flowed directly to the Atlantic ocean. And as you can see below, it flowed right through the Richat structure.

This ancient river also just happened to flow from the Atlas Mountains. This find is made even more curious when we find out that there have been discoveries of freshwater fossils.

Now while the argument has been made that the fossils are simply remnants of a time when the Sahara was beneath the oceans as explained by it topographical makeup, the fossils we are discussing here are freshwater. Think lake, not ocean. To further this, it is interesting to note that the radiocarbon dating relating to these fossils indicate the time period of their accumulation to have taken place between 15,000 and 8,000 before present. That put it between 13,000 and 6,000BC. Which puts existence and fall of Atlantis as described by Plato right in the middle of these estimates).

A few problems with this one though.

  1. This one could be argued. Technically, its location is again, like our location in Spain, somewhat adjacent and not opposite the Pillars of Heracles. However, looking at the mouth of where this river joins the Atlantic, if one were to sail from Greece and come to visit Atlantis, you would have sailed out through the exit of the strait of Gibraltar at the pillars of Heracles. Entering the real/true ocean as Plato put it, before heading south to reach the river entrance to this potential location.
  2. Where are the buildings? -There have not been any archeological remains of structures found at the site. Even if it had suffered a cataclysmic event like that of Naples, or been swept under by a large tsunami, the likelihood of absolutely no architectural remains being found near the site would be almost impossible. The only possibly consideration would be that they have been moved by tidal forces, and have not yet been discovered. But the ocean usually does well to preserve sunken civilizations, for example in Japan or off the coast of Cuba. Also, given that the environment to follow would be a dry, desert region not too dissimilar to what is found in Egypt today; it should have been a prime environment for preservation of ancient monuments. Such is a contributing reason to the preservations of Egyptian monuments and the lack of weathering from the elements such as rain. Although there are some very interesting factors to be found in Egypt regarding weathering. Check out Origins Of The Sphinx

The last, and maybe the most interesting in my opinion. Due to the nature of the location and the evidence supplied in favor of this theory:

Ireland

The location of this theory comes from Keystone university. While this isn’t an accredited university, and appears to be something altogether different; it does make some interesting claims. Enough to be investigated further. Especially when considering that this is not the first time someone has placed Atlantis in Ireland. In 2004, Dr. Ulf Erlingsson, a renowned, prizewinning scientist, published a scientific paper and a book: Atlantis from a Geographer’s Perspective which claimed that Ireland was the legendary lost Atlantis.

Pharaoh Menes resting place found in Ireland?

The potential Uniter of lower and upper Egypt (although through war), and the first pharaoh of Ancient Egypt in the first dynasty had a second burial location supposed to be at Knockmany, in County Tyrone, Ireland. The original theorized location was discovered empty. Possibly being built as a cenotaph – a symbolic burial, while his remains were elsewhere.

Land of the Setting Sun

Several ancient hieroglyphic texts tell of how the Egyptians came from “an island of flame” or “sunset land” in the Atlantic ocean before a great flood. Ireland is often known as the land of the setting sun; Ignatius Donnelly, responsible for beginning the mainstream search into the mystery of Atlantis with a theory on the Azores, stated:

“In the Sanskrit books it is referred to as Hiranya, the ‘Island of the Sun’, to with, of sun-worship; in others words, as pre-eminently the centre of that religion which was shared by all the ancient races of Europe, Asia, Africa, and America.”

Finally, in ancient times Ireland was known as Erin. Which comes very close in its etymology (the history of the origin of words) in the eyes of Laurence Waddell. A Scottish explorer of the  late 18th/early 19th century. He claims it resembles another name given to this parent land of the Egyptians: Urani.

A translation of a hieroglyphic text found at by Sir Flinders Petrie in 1901 in the cenotaph of Pharaoh King Menes reads:

“King Menes, the Ruler of Mizraim [Egypt] made the complete course to the end of the Sunset Land. Sailing in ships, he completed the inspection of the Western Land. He built there a holding in Urani Land. At the Lake of the Peak, fate pierced him by a Hornet (Bee Sting) . . . This drilled tablet set up of hanging wood is dedicated to his memory.”

Pharaoh Menes returned to the place where their civilization had fled from in a great flood, to see the location of his ancestors. This was said to be Atlantis, but here being stated as making a case for Ireland.

Precious Tin

Laurence Waddell makes the case for Ireland as the ‘western land’ and the ‘end of the sunset’. Not just on account of the etymology of the name, but also as Menes’ father, Sargon, had voyaged to the ‘tin’ land and had set up correspondence with its mines. The tin land was said to be that of Cornwall. And that the most western land to be seen from this point being that of Ireland; in the eye of the setting sun when seen from the coast. It was the farthest that the Egyptians had ventured at that point, and the Sumero Phoenician explorers had not yet ventured to the Azores or the Americas. Leaving a clear explanation of the name given to the emerald isle as the land of the setting sun.

Furthermore, the Sumerian inscriptions found at Menes cenotaph in Egypt had a twin in Ireland. In Knockmany (the hill of many) two standing boulder stones are inscribed with Sumerian linear writing that Waddell states as “practically identical in their writing and contents with those of the ebony label from the empty tomb of Mena or Many or Menes…”

Both mention the land of ‘Urani’ and perhaps, hill of many is referring to Menes or Manj or Manis. All of which are names of the founding Pharaoh of the 1st dynasty from different cultures he impacted.

Egypt’s miraculous evolution

It is a unique aspect of the ancient Egyptians, their ability to build fantastic structures without much previous experience. They show up as masters of structural engineering with no history of development. Then it is interesting to find their nature as stone builders, and their worshipping of the sun.

The founder of Egyptian Civilization, Thoth, the God of wisdom who brought with him the knowledge of civilization; philosophy, science, astronomy, math, building, and writing was apparently born in a distant country to the west. A country which was across a body of water.

Is it possible that he brought that knowledge from Ireland? The early druids have sometimes been referred to as the beginning of a civilized nation. Could this be where Thoth came from, bringing knowledge of his country to Egypt? Ireland has possibly the largest concentration of megalithic structures, and some of the highest quality in workmanship.

Megalithic Voyages

Areas of highest concentration of megalithic structures discovered (indicated by grey highlighting)

It is then along the coastline of modern Europe and Africa that we find the highest concentration of these types of Structures. Outside of Ireland, of course. This definitely lends favor to the idea that Ireland could have been a seafaring nation. Especially when considering that the structures are largely found throughout Ireland while remaining in their highest density on the coastlines of Europe and Africa, i.e. at their points of arrival.

This ancient building knowledge may have been the prerequisite to the pyramids. We know that Thoth, as the God of wisdom and the moon, was said to have played a game with the moon, winning 5 extra days to add to the year. Allowing for the birth of Osiris, after nut was cursed by Ra for the then 360 days of the year; preventing her from bearing a child. Could this mythical tale simply be an astronomical correction that, with his advanced knowledge, Thoth brought to Egypt? For another time, maybe.

But, Ireland’s clear history as masterful megalithic stone builders could explain this lack of historically recorded structural development that Ancient Egypt seems to lack. Outside of the theories that they had extraterrestrial help.

Temple of Poseidon, Atlantis’ crowning jewel, in Ireland?

The Site of Newgrange, in Ireland, is set as the temple to the sea god, Poseidon. It is here that Atlantis was supposed to centre upon in Plato’s writings. This theory would have Plato mixing two locations, both the Country of Atlantis, and the City of Atlantis.

These both being different locations but part of the same empire.

After a story had past down for 9,000 years, and from just the short time period we know between the time when monks told of Atlantis to Solon and then through Plato, the story had already past through three generations between them. Even if the story had been accurate, and not a fabrication for teaching, it is possible that over such a long course of history the location had adapted.

However, The vedas of India are said to have been passed down in such a deep way, that there has only been two words corrupted (or lost) from the original texts. Pretty impressive considering it is the oldest currently practiced religion in modern history.

In this case, the temple has been placed in the country of Atlantis, Ireland.

Newgrange

Taking its place is Newgrange. An impressive neolithic site that boasts to be older than the Great pyramid of Giza in modern evaluations. If this is true, it could explain the building development as we said earlier.

What makes this site more convincing is that Newgrange was dedicated to a river god. It’s set in the valley of the Boyne, which plays a large part in the divine story.

It is a temple dedicated to a god and not of a human burial as the archeological evidence at Newgrange would suggest. It is dedicated to the God, or Nature spirit known as Nechtan. You know where this is going. He is associated with the Roman God, Neptune; Greek God,… You guessed it! Poseidon. Nechtan is directly connected with the wellspring or source of the River Boyne; the same river of the valley Newgrange is found in.

Need more? The original name for Newgrange main site is Brú na Bóinne, translating as Palace or Mansion of the Boyne. A residence. A residence of a God, perhaps a river god, of the well of wisdom. How perfect.

The problem with this one

If we are to take the current dating on the foundation of the potential temple of Poseidon at Newgrange as necessary for this location to have been Atlantis, then this theory falls short.

The reason we need it?

The date set for the construction of Newgrange, was 3200B.C.

As we see with the theory of Atlantis’s downfall coming in at 9,000 years before the time of Solon (around 600B.C.), 200 years before Plato. That would put us around the End of the younger dryas, when a cataclysmic mini-extinction level event had occurred. Which is a good date correlating with the idea of the fall/flood of Atlantis. Well, we would assume that the structure would have been dated to before that time period, not 6000 years later.

Even If we forget the mini-extinction level event. One that has evidence behind it, and is referenced in the stories of many ancient cultures. And instead, we took into the account the timeline supplied of the dagger valley collapse theory. We say that this was what was responsible for the fall of Atlantis; the building of temple of Poseidon would still have had to occurred before this happened, at around 8100B.C. In other words, time is not matching up.

But before we go, whether Atlantis is fact, or fiction in the writings of Plato, he leaves us with a very clear message that I believe is just as relevant today;

“Atlantis ceased to wear its prosperity with moderation”.

It had become so sure of itself, so conceited, that the universe took action and struck it down as it became a corrupted shadow of its former self. We find in many of these ancient tales of extinction level events both past and prophesied, that there is this idea, this warning that humanity is responsible. We must remember to live with love in our hearts, and treat others equally.
